Artemis Rising: The Power of Feminine Freedom

When Alice founded The Female Archetypes, she envisioned clothing designed to embrace every version of womanhood. In practice, this meant that she designed clothes which could adapt to women’s bodies’ ever-changing shapes and sizes. But it also meant cultivating a movement that celebrated every archetype of feminine existence.

Bolen’s Feminine Archetypes

Alice’s vision naturally connected with the framework of the feminine archetypes. Just as clothing can express the many sides of who we are, mythology offers archetypes that reflect those facets of female identity. First defined by Jean Shinoda Bolen and based on seven goddesses of Greek mythology, each archetype represents a facet of feminine existence: the Huntress, the Mother, the Maiden, the Mystic, the Sage, the Queen, and the Lover. We are never just one of them; instead, we carry each within us, rising and ebbing in different phases of our lives.

This article marks the beginning of our journey discovering these seven feminine archetypes, uncovering the timeless stories that continue to shape us today. By starting our series with Artemis, we ground our exploration in the archetype of freedom, reminding ourselves that every path of feminine expression begins with the right to choose.

The Spirit of Artemis

Bow in hand, moon at her back, the mythological Artemis ran through the wild, untamed, independent, and utterly free. Far from a relic of the past, she remains relevant as a symbol of direction and purpose. She lives on as a representation of every woman who chooses independence in a society that demands conformity. In a world that constantly tries to fit us into a mould, Artemis’ independence allows women to forge their paths outside of societal expectations, whether that be in their careers, lifestyles or the causes they care about.

This independence is matched by a fierce compassion and sense of purpose, rendering her a guardian of the vulnerable. Women like Artemis are drawn to causes like social justice and the protection of our planet. Her bond with nature especially resonates today, reflected in the growing embrace of wellness, eco-conscious living, and sustainability. At The Female Archetypes, we share these values, believing that true style should never come at the planet’s expense.

Another aspect of Artemis that deeply resonates with us at The Female Archetypes is her devotion to sisterhood. Constantly surrounded by her band of nymphs, she embodies the strength women find in solidarity and community. This companionship balances the challenges of her archetype, a tendency toward emotional distance and a difficulty with vulnerability. In this, Artemis reminds us not to measure women by their choices - in love, family, or tradition - but to honour the sisterhood that unites us.

Living Artemis Today

Remember, no woman is just one archetype. Throughout our lives, we shift fluidly between them all, depending on our stage of life and circumstances. Moreover, a woman may embody Artemis in her career, Demeter in her role at home, and Aphrodite in her romantic life. This fluidity is not a contradiction but a profound strength, a testament to the richness and adaptability of feminine identity, something we will explore further in the next few weeks.

Ultimately, this also means that we can all learn a little bit from Artemis. She reminds us of the importance of autonomy in politics, culture, and the choices that shape our lives. Her circle of nymphs speaks to the need for safe spaces and solidarity among women, where strength is found in community. And her deep bond with the natural world calls us back to sustainability and eco-conscious living, values that lie at the very heart of The Female Archetypes’ ethos. In embodying Artemis, we are reminded that true freedom lies not only in how we live, but in how we care for one another, and for the world we share.
